Swords are weapons possessing long-edged shapes. They are considered as supreme fighting weapons that have fierce cutting abilities.
A blade with 1 or 2 edges, a sharp point, and a hilt form the body of a sword. Each of these parts plays a key role in its handling. A sharp blade and a sharp point provide with ruthless cutting power and thrusting, while a hilt helps in sustaining strong grip.
A sword developed various forms, by different civilizations across the globe, and hence, contains an interesting history that originates right from the Bronze Age, to the present Modern Age. Swords are associated with infamous Roman Gladiators, Japanese Ninjas and Samurais, English Knights, Viking Warriors and many other eminent leaders like Attila the Hun, El Cid, and so on.
Generally, swords contain a sharpened metal piece that normally ranges from 24 to 48 inches in length. Considered as a symbol of power, swords are classified into two types, namely:
Single- handed swords, which include; Bronze Age swords, Iron Age swords, Medieval Europe’s classical arming sword, light dueling swords, the Arabian scimitar, the Persian shamshir, the East Indian kris, and many more.
Double-handed swords, which include; the Chinese anti-cavalry swords, the long sword - which belongs to the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the 16th-century ‘Doppelhänder’, the Japanese Samurai swords, and the Scottish Highland claymore – which was used until the 18th century.
Swords also symbolise combat, violence, and military actions. They are used in several sport games; fencing being one of the most well-recognized sport games. Swords are extensively used not only in real life, but also in loads of action movies, throughout the world. Famous movies like Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings, Mortal Combat, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , Passion of the Christ, King Arthur, The Mask of Zorro, The 13th Warrior, Empire, and several others, have made great use of the Sword to depict their storyline. Moreover, the animation world has also seen extensive use of swords in many programmes and movies.
Furthermore, the gaming industry has also benefited with the increasing popularity of swords. Games like The Age of Empires, Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars, Heavenly Sword and many more have become large selling games all over the world.
