The Nunchaku is a distinguished martial arts weapon of the Kobudo set of weapons, consisting of two sticks adjoined to the ends of a rope or a short chain. It is also referred to as ‘numchuks’, ‘nunchucks’, or ‘chain sticks’ in English.

Nunchaku has an unconfirmed history as far as its origin is concerned. However, it is said that it was either in China or Okinawa, where they originated. There are different theories regarding the purpose, and the existence, of the Nunchaku.

With Bruce Lee, the martial artist, using the Nunchaku in his movies, in the 1970s, the Nunchaku gained tremendous popularity not only in China, but all across the world. Yet, it has a very limited use in the field of Martial Arts today. Furthermore, it is considered as the least understood martial arts weapons.

The structure of the Nunchaku is interesting in its own way. Difficult and complex to handle, it lacks effective combating features, unlike a sword. Moreover, it can possibly cause injury to the user, at the time of use.

In spite of the above mentioned lacking features, the Nunchaku, has still earned a prominent name in the world, especially since the 1980s. This success could be attributed to its baffling motion, matchless speed, and monstrous close-range striking force. Another success contributing factor could be its association with ninja during the 1980s ninja fad. Due to this popularity, there are several coaching classes throughout the world, dealing with the use of the Nunchaku.

Considered as a harmful weapon, the possessing or using of the Nunchaku is forbidden in numerous countries like; Spain, Germany, Hong-Kong and Norway. Also, strict legal rules are followed in some American states like; Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, and California, along with few places in Australia.

The Nunchaku can differ in form. For instance a Chinese Nunchaku, which is normally round, is different from a Japanese Nunchaku, which contains an octagonal cross-section. The traditional nunchaku is made from a firm, flexible hardwood like; pasania, loquat or oak. However, the modern can be built from any compatible material like; metal, wood, fiberglass or plastic material, or even aluminim. The rope can also be substituted with metal chains or nylon cords, if required.

Due to its worldly recognition, you will witness the Nunchaku, being used in several video games like; The Last Ninja, Double Dragon 3, Darkstalkers, Bad Dudes, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy, Soul Edge, and many many more.
