Mixed martial arts or MMA is a used to describe a combination of three tactics used by both the opponents. These are Striking, finishing holds and control. The main aim of both the opponents here it to dominate each other with these tactics and thus take control of the game.

Pat Miletich, one of the greatest coaches of the sport and Brazilian Royce Gracie, who helped popularize grappling in MMA, are among the pioneers of mixed martial arts in America.

Earlier, Mixed Martial arts were banned as it was considered too vicious for the decent society. Fighters could stomp, kick to the groin, there were no time limits, and virtually no rules to govern the game. Some of the critics named it as "human cockfighting". It was barred in many states and also banned on television.

The sport, being fascinated by the young crowd was again back with a bang and became one of the fastest growing sports of the United States. The Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC set up safety rules for the contestants.

The rules allow the components to use punches, kicks, takedowns, throws etc. Some of the rules however, have undergone considerable changes, keeping in mind the safety and security of the fighters.

Some main motivations for these rule changes included:

1. Protection of the health of the fighters:

Since a fighter gives his life to this sport, the implementation of a rule like this motivated the entire team of fighters. The goal of this was to make the sport less violent. It would in turn help athletes to take further care while they fight and also while they undergo training.

2. Providing spectacle for spectators:

The rules promote good fighters involved in action-packed fights rather than no-skill "street brawls." Weight classes came into being as soon as the technique of submission spread worldwide. This in-turn helped to increase the knowledge for the entire concept of “Weight” for both the fighters and the audience.

3. Gloves were included:

Gloves became an essential part of all the Martial Arts techniques. It was the UFC who introduced this rule. Small, open-finger gloves were introduced to protect fists in punches. Gloves also reduce the occurrence of cuts and encourage fighters to use their hands for striking, both of which enable more captivating matches.

The match might look simple and exciting when the players are inside the ring; however a lot of hard work, determination and winning spirit are required to key in the match. The players have to be in a concentrated frame of mind, even if they are wounded or injured and to make the right decision to use the right techniques at the right time. Successful fighters today are the ones with the most well rounded game i.e. they are well versed in all forms of fighting arts

Today, Mixed Martial Arts have gained worldwide popularity and is enjoyed by millions of viewers on television, cable and PPV.
