Kickboxing is the most recent and the most modernized form of Martial Art, having punches, kicks and other moves to improve the cardiovascular system. It combines elements of boxing, martial arts and aerobics to provide overall physical conditioning and toning.
The history of this art can be rooted way back about thousand years ago. Many are under the impression that modern day kickboxing originated in Thailand, Japan or some place in the Far East. But in reality, the real origins of the sport are revealed by the Americans. Kickboxing started in the United States in 1970's. In America, the practitioners of the other martial art form like karate, were frustrated with the set of rules and regulations governing the art in the competition, as it did not allow free movement of kicks or punches. Also, there was lack of a competitive scoring system. They wanted to find a system within which they could apply kicks and punches to the knockout. Full contact karate was born.
As this sport initialized, people realized that there could be a high risk of injury and illnesses. Keeping these shortcomings in mind, the sport was further modified and protective clothing were added. Since then, the sport is being constantly redefined into the modern form, overcoming the shortcomings of the previous martial art forms and introduces a lot of punches, kicks, kick blocks, shadow boxing, and wood breaking. All this is however performed or learnt under a professional instructor only.
Initially, small competitions were held on open matted areas. Later, these events were staged in big Boxing Rings. The first few kickboxing stars were Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, Benny Urquidez and Jeff Smith.
World Kickboxing Association (WKA) was formed in the United States. The WKA sent its team to Japan for a contest and this is how Kickboxing acclaimed worldwide popularity, having its tournaments all over, making it an International game. The WKA today, is the world's oldest and largest sanctioning body, and continues to grow.
In recent times, this art is learnt as an aerobic exercise and also as a fast means to loose weight. However, this art is known as the cardio kickboxing. It does not involve any match between the contestants, but is considered as a cardiovascular workout that's done because of its many benefits to the body. According to a study by the ACE, one can burn anywhere from 350 to 450 calories an hour with kickboxing. It also has various other benefits like relieving stress, making body flexible and an aid to self-defense.
