Aikido is a creative type of martial art which is effective and powerful in protecting oneself from potential attackers. It involves various tactics and movements for self defense. It teaches various tricks to oppose or handle the aggressor when one is attacked. The aikidoka (aikido student), does not use any form of punches or kicks, instead tries to focus on the opponent's mindset and energy. This helps to increase one's focusing power, improve balance and coordination In addition it can help in relieving stress. For some, taking part in Aikido may be for health reasons in that  it might provide the means to loose weight.

In this form of self defense, one can get full control over mind and body. Unlike other forms of martial arts like karate and other striking arts which teaches straight line of attack, aikido's self-defense tactics is more artistic using dance-like and rhythmical movements.

Aikido also teaches the basics of humanism, where the practitioner or aikidoka is taught to put an end to the circumstances instead of unnecessarily injuring the attacker. However, the aikidoka should be aware of the surroundings in order to avoid any surprise attacks and stay calm in the face of danger.

Its history is rooted in late 1942,  by Morihei Ueshiba in Eastern Asia. Born in Japan on December 14, 1883, Ueshiba had seen his father beaten up by local thugs for various political reasons. Being spiritual in nature, he started thinking of some solution to peaceful revenge wherein one fights only when beaten or attacked. He dedicated himself to hours of physical training, where he learned various forms of martial arts like of jujitsu, fencing, and spear fighting. However his spiritual and religious practices never allowed him to hurt any person unless required. Thus, he created AIKIDO whose essence is to is to blend and not clash with an incoming attack. Ueshiba was also deeply affected by the destruction of Japan after world war - II. Seeing what a fight could do to his countrymen, he wanted an innovative way combining other forms of martial arts to create humanity based self defense program.

Aikido is one of the only two martial arts accepted and endorsed by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).

A truly dedicated student will improve his stamina, will-power, relieve stress and mental pressure and develop into an active, fearful and confident human being. The fruits of Aikido might be endless, but what’s more important is to apply the benefits of these fruits in one's daily life as well.
